Wayne Gretzky is a former star NHL player. He has been nicknamed “The Great One,” and has been called the best hockey player ever by various players and sportswriters. He holds the NHL record for most points and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season; he accomplished this feat four times. During his career, Gretzky won four Stanley Cup championships and received nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player in the NHL. In addition, he captured ten Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season, five Lady Byng trophies, five Lester B. Pearson Awards, and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP.

In his rookie season, Sports Speaker Wayne Gretzky was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the League’s Most Valuable Player, which became his first of eight in a row. During this season, he also attained the highest point total by a first year player in NHL history. In the 1981-1982 season, Gretzky broke a record that stood for 35 years: 50 goals in 50 games. Gretzky accomplished this goal in only 39 games. Later in the season, Gretzky broke the record for most goals in a season. At the end of the year, Gretzky became the first hockey player to be named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. He was also named 1982 Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. After this remarkable season, Gretzky would go on to break his own assists record three more times during his career. After he finished playing in Edmonton, Gretzky held or shared 49 NHL records.  In 1990, the Associated Press named Gretzky Male Athlete of the Decade.

Gretzky has sponsored various companies, including Skechers, EA Sports, TD Bank, Ford, and Samsung. He has also made over 60 appearances in various movies and television shows, such as Saturday Night Live and Dance Fever. In 2002, Wayne Gretzky established the Wayne Gretzky Foundation, which serves to provide underprivileged youth with the opportunity to experience hockey. This is accomplished through donating hockey equipment and ice team, as well as providing tickets to professional hockey games.
