A former southpaw starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets in Major League Baseball, Sports Speaker Tom Glavine was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot in 2014. He joins former rotation mate Greg Maddux along with beloved Braves manager Bobby Cox who will all be inducted into the hall of fame together in 2014. He is one of 6 left-handed pitchers t o ever reach the 300 win mark in their career and only the 24th pitcher overall to reach the benchmark.

Sports Speaker Tom Glavine is best known for his years with the Braves in the 1990’s and early 2000’s that saw the team win a record 14 consecutive division titles and a World Series championship and MVP Award in 1995. Some may not know that before Tom was taken in the 2nd round of the MLB draft in 1984 he was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL hockey draft before being taken in the 2nd round by the Braves and electing to pursue a career in baseball. Tom would go on to win 2 Cy Young Awards and eventually having his #47 jersey retired by the Braves. Tom was also awarded the Silver Slugger Award 4 times, an award given to the best hitter at each position and recognized the pitcher as an all-around ballplayer.

Post career Tom Glavine has been an active philanthropist in his community in Atlanta, Georgia, supporting causes that provide children with needed school supplies, selling personal property and a charity wine to raise funds for childhood cancer research and the families of patients in need. For over two decades Tom has also been a celebrity athlete spokesperson for the Georgia Transplant Foundation for which he hosts an event in Atlanta each year featuring live and silent auctions and former MLB greats.
