Biography:

Shawn Johnson is a retired American gymnast who became etched in Olympic history after her gold medal performance in the 2008 Summer Olympics. She won the gold medal in the balance beam event and took silver in the individual all-around event behind teammate Nastia Liukin. This 1-2 finish for the United States marked the first time ever in Olympic history that the U.S. women’s team had finished in the top 2 spots in the individual all-around event. Shawn would also receive silver medals in the floor event as well as the all-around team competition. Post career Shawn has become a sponsored Nike athlete and appeared in several print and commercial ads for the company.

Olympic Sports Speaker Shawn worked hard to become a part of the successful Olympic team that went to Beijing, China. Shawn worked her way onto the U.S. National team and had a big year in 2007 winning 4 gold medals and silver at the Pan American Games and 3 gold medals at the World Championships. Her stand out performance at the VISA Championships solidified her spot on the U.S. national team heading to Beijing and awarded her 3 more gold medals. After her Olympic performance, Shawn was widely recognized as one of the best gymnasts and female athletes of the year. Forbes magazine named her America’s Most Liked Sports Figure and won the ESPY award for Best Female U.S. Olympian in 2009. In August of 2013, Shawn was inducted into the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

Post retirement Shawn returned to the public spotlight as she danced her way through season 8 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. She would win the season alongside partner Mark Ballas and earned a 2nd place finish in the All-Star edition that aired in 2012. She has authored 2 books about her life and experiences in gymnastics and has appeared on many morning and late night talk shows including The Today Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
