Biography:

Baseball Guest Speaker for hire Pedro Martinez is a former starting pitcher most notably for the Boston Red Sox. In 2004, Pedro was a part of a historic Red Sox organization that broke the supposed curse of the Great Bambino and brought a World Series title back to Boston for the first time since 1918. In his prime, Pedro overpowered some of the greatest hitters the game will ever see with his sizzling fastballs and unhittable slow pitches. Pedro holds the record for the lowest adjusted ERA in baseball history. What may be most impressive about Pedro’s career body of work is the fact that he was that dominant during an era in baseball clouded by cheating scandals such as steroid use and corked bats.

A young, wiry Pedro Martinez from the Dominican Republic pitched his way onto the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988 and saw his first official big league action in 1992. He honed his skills on the mound with the Montreal Expos from 1994-1997. It was then that he was traded to the Red Sox and began his era of dominance in a perennially strong AL East division. He was a strikeout king who became the 8th player in MLB history to record at least 2 seasons with 300 strikeouts following a stellar season in 1999. He won his second of 3 total Cy Young Awards that year and was the AL wins champ with a 23-4 record. Many believe Pedro should’ve won MVP that year when he received the most first place votes of any player but was left off the ballot by two voters.

By the time the 2004 season rolled around, Pedro had accomplished much in his career but was still missing that elusive World Series ring. He and his Red Sox teammates won the Series that year in memorable fashion after coming back from improbable odds. Following the big win, Pedro signed as a free agent with the Mets and finished his career as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. Sports Illustrated as named Pedro as 1 of 5 starting pitchers on their MLB All-Decade Team in 2009. Since his retirement, Baseball Guest Speaker Pedro Martinez has worked as a color-commentator and a special assistant to Red Sox GM Ben Cherington.
