Sports Speaker Mike Schmidt put together a Hall of Fame career as a third baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies in the MLB. He played all 18 seasons in a Phillies uniform, earning him the title as one of the greatest players ever in Phillies organization history. He is widely considered the best third baseman the game has ever seen ahead of the likes of George Brett and Brooks Robinson. In 2014, Mike joined the broadcast booth for Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia to provide color commentary for Sunday games. Mike has since added Saturday games to his schedule acting as the featured color commentator for Phillies weekend games.

Sports Speaker Mike Schmidt was a solid fielder who doubled his worth with his power hitting at the plate. He was drafted by the Phillies with the 31st overall pick in the 1971 MLB Draft. He was a capable athlete who was able to play shortstop, third base and second base effectively. He made his first of 12 All-Star Game appearances in 1974 just 2 seasons after his official major league debut. Over the course of the next 10 years, Mike would rack up 10 Gold Glove awards for his performance in the field and lead the National League in home runs 8 times during the span. The Phillies won the World Series in 1980 and Mike took home MVP honors for his clutch performance against the Kansas City Royals. Mike would eventually retire in 1989 having led the Phillies franchise to their first ever World Series crown and taking home 3 National League MVP awards in the process. He briefly returned as a hitting coach and minor league manager for the Phillies in the early 2000’s before resigning in 2004.

Mike was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. 2 years later he was voted as the starting third baseman for the MLB All-Century Team chosen by the Baseball Writers Association of America. In 2007, he published a book called Clearing the Bases: Juiced Players, Monster Salaries, Sham Records, and a Hall of Famer’s Search for the Soul of Baseball. The book provided his thoughts on all the controversy surrounding today’s game. In 2014, Sports Speaker Mike Schmidt announced that he had been diagnosed with stage-3 melanoma. He received treatment and is since cancer free.
