Sports Speaker Michael Sam was a 7th round pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft but in his eyes and the eyes of many, it was just as good as going #1 overall. Since opening up about his sexuality in an interview on ESPN’s Outside the Lines, he has become a role model and serves as an inspiration for other gay athletes to continue to pursue their dreams. Michael is the first openly gay player to become a part of the National Football League. Earlier this year Jason Collins became the first openly gay player ever to play in professional sports when he signed on with the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association. Both Jason and Michael have become lead ambassadors for the acceptance of homosexuality in professional sports. His job will not only to be a top-notch football player, but to now provide a strong voice for others who are to follow in his footsteps.

Michael was an All-American defensive tackle at the University of Missouri for 4 years and helped the team to a Cotton Bowl victory in his senior season in 2013. In an open team talk session before his senior season, Michael shared his secret with his Missouri teammates and was overwhelmed with support. Missouri moved to the SEC just a year earlier in 2012 and now face some of the best competition in the country including Alabama, Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M. Yet the new competition didn’t slow Michael down and he lead the conference in sacks with 11.5 and 19 tackles for a loss in 2013. He was nominated for a number of college football’s other top defensive awards including the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Lombardi Award, and the Hendricks Award. His career totals at Missouri came to 123 tackles (36 for a loss), 21 sacks, 6 forced-fumbles and 2 interceptions.
