Sports Motivational Speaker Mary Joe Fernandez burst onto the pro tennis scene at the age of 14. Just 8 days after her 14th birthday, Mary Joe set the record as the youngest player ever to win a main draw match at the U.S. Open. Now over 30 years later, Mary Joe is recognized as the second most influential Hispanic female athlete of all-time behind golfer Nancy Lopez. She found success in a golden era of women’s tennis going up against future Hall of Famers like Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles. In 2014, Mary Joe was hired as the featured Keynote Speaker at the Learning For Life Speakers Series in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

During her incredible tennis career, Motivational Speaker Mary Joe Fernandez worked her way to peak at #4 in the world during the 1991 season. She was a star in singles and doubles events. She won 7 WTA singles titles and 2 Grand Slam doubles titles. She won the Australian Open doubles title with Patty Fendick in 1991 and took home the doubles title at the French Open in 1996 with Lindsay Davenport.

Some of Mary Joe’s best tennis came as a member of the Women’s U.S. Olympic tennis team. She made her first appearance at the Olympic Games at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain. Mary Joe took home a Bronze Medal in singles play while earning a Gold Medal in women’s doubles with Gigi Fernandez. She was added to the 1996 Women’s Olympic team as a late replacement for Chanda Rubin. Her masterful play earned her another Gold Medal in the doubles event again with partner Gigi Fernandez.

Mary Joe retired from professional tennis in 2000. Her knowledge of the game continues to serve her well as a tennis commentator for ESPN. In 2012, Mary Joe was called upon to coach the Women’s U.S. Olympic Tennis team at the Olympic Games in London. Serena Williams won both the singles event and the doubles event with sister Venus that year.
