Kawhi Leonard has quietly become one of the household names in the NBA, and a hidden gem for the San Antonio Spurs.  Known for his calm and tranquil demeanor, Leonard is an absolute terror for opposing teams on the hardwood.  Sports Speaker Kawhi has earned a reputation as one of the hardest working young players in the league, and is respected as a player and person throughout the league.  He endured many hardships growing up, most notably the unsolved murder of his father when Kawhi was just 16. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kawhi became a star on the California basketball circuit. Choosing to stay close to home, Leonard decided to play his college ball at San Diego State University.

Kawhi Leonard quickly became a premier player on the college basketball scene, and after just two years playing for San Diego State he declared for the 2011 NBA Draft.  After being selected 15th overall by the Indiana Pacer and traded immediately to the Spurs, Leonard made an instant impact in his rookie campaign.  Kawhi was named to the 2012 NBA Rookie 1st Team, and parlayed his success into significant improvements in his next two seasons.  By the 2014 NBA Playoffs Kawhi was viewed as arguably the most important player for the Spurs in their quest to beat the Miami Heat.  The 2014 NBA Finals proved to be his official entrance to stardom as he went mano-a-mano against LeBron James.  Leonard put forth star performances in Games 3-5 of the series en route to claiming his first NBA Championship.  For his efforts, Leonard was awarded the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP award making him the 2nd youngest player to ever win the award.  It held even more significance to Leonard as the deciding game culminated on Father’s Day.

Legendary Spurs Coach Greg Popovich has called Leonard the “future face of the franchise” for the San Antonio Spurs.  Leonard hosts an annual basketball camp for youth players that benefits the Boys to Men Mentoring Network.
