Julius Erving was one of the world’s most exciting athletes of the 20th century.  The man known as ‘Dr. J’ helped create an entirely new brand of modern basketball through his high flying leaping ability and play above the rim.  His modern style of play and catchy nickname has earned him long-lasting status in today’s pop culture.  Erving, who attended the University of Massachusetts for 3 years, played 16 combined seasons between the ABA and NBA.

Erving first entered professional basketball as a member of the Virginia Squires of the ABA, where he played for 3 years.  Following that he joined the New York Nets where he began to catch the attention of the NBA.  After winning two ABA championships in 2 years, the league disbanded following the 1975-1976.  Julius was then sold to the Philadelphia 76er’s in a move that was deemed financially necessary by the Nets who were new to the NBA.  Erving turned into a national phenomenon with the 76er’s as his athletic acrobatic display was now available in a large sports market.  He quickly became one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers on his way to being named to the All-NBA First Team 5 times, 2-NBA All Star Games, and the 1981 NBA MVP Award.  Sports Speaker Erving became an extremely recognizable face in the realm of pop culture during this time as well due to endorsements from companies such as Converse and ChapStick.  His career hit its climax in terms of success in 1983 when he and Moses Malone led the 76er’s to their one and only NBA Title.  In 1993 Julius Erving was inducted into the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame.  “Dr. J” is still regarded as one of the greatest dunkers of all-time.

After his retirement, Julius Erving has continued his work as a businessman.  He purchased the rights to a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Philadelphia, and even briefly fielded a NASCAR Team. Erving has been a long-time spokesperson for Dr. Pepper, and has been featured in a variety of their commercials.  Crown Royal has also partnered with him in recent years.
