Jeff Van Gundy is a former NBA head coach and current television announcer/personality.  Van Gundy is a light-hearted favorite of NBA fans who are exposed to his witty humor when he color commentates games.  Sports Speaker Jeff began his career in basketball as a NCAA Division III basketball player at Nazareth College in Pittsford, NY.  Realizing that his playing days were over, Van Gundy decided to focus his efforts towards coaching.  In 1986, he was hired as a graduate assistant to Rick Pitino at Providence College.  The following year Jeff was promoted to assistant coach at Providence after Pitino’s departure.  In 1988 Van Gundy left Providence to become an assistant coach at Rutgers University.  This proved to be Jeff’s last stop in the college ranks because the following year he was hired as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks.

Jeff Van Gundy was an assistant coach for the New York Knicks from 1989-1996.  After the 1996 season, Van Gundy was promoted to the head coaching position for the Knicks.  He coached the Knicks for just over 6 seasons leading them to the playoffs every year.  In 1999, Van Gundy led the team on an improbable run to the NBA Finals where they would eventually lose to the San Antonio Spurs.  In the middle of his 7th season with the Knicks, Van Gundy abruptly resigned from his head coaching position in 2001.  Jeff returned to the coaching ranks in 2003 as the head coach of Houston Rockets.  He coached the Rockets for 4 seasons reaching the NBA Playoffs 3 times before being fired following the 2007 season.  The Rockets never advanced past the first round under Van Gundy.

Following his firing from the Rockets in 2007, Van Gundy was hired by ESPN as a color commentator for NBA games.  Since this time, he has continued to call games for ESPN and has become one of the most popular broadcasters in the field.  Jeff is an executive board member at Pro-Vision, which is a non-profit organization designed to help male adolescents with life training.
