Biography:

From playing defensive end for the Houston Texans to acting as the new face of the H-E-B grocery store ads, Sports Speaker J.J. Watt has worked his way from the football field to the television screen. With a career expanding from his time as a Badger at the University of Wisconsin to a Toro for the Houston Texans, the nickname “J.J. Swatt” has become a household name. Watt began his professional career in 2011 when he was drafted 11th overall by the Houston Texans in the NFL draft. Showcasing his elite skill with the Texans in the team’s first ever playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals in January 2012, Watt intercepted quarterback Andy Dalton for his first career NFL touchdown, gaining the lead to eventually win the game 31-10.

Watt began making a name for himself during the Texans’ Week 12 game against the Detroit Lions in 2012 when he broke the Texans franchise record for most sacks in a single season, a position previously held by former teammate Mario Williams. Not only did former NFL head coach and Monday Night Football commentator Jon Gruden dub him “J.J. Swatt” for his impressive defensive performance, but he was also a unanimous pick for the 2012 Associated Press All-Pro team.

The spotlight continued to shine on Watt after a Week 13 victory against the Tennessee Titans in 2012 when he became the first player in NFL history to record 16.5 sacks and tip 15 passes in a single season. Watt was also the starting defensive end for the AFC Division in the 2013 Pro Bowl, where the Texans eventually lost in the divisional round against the Patriots. Despite the team’s difficult defeat in the Pro Bowl, Watt continued to make history when he made his debut as a number five ranked player on the 2013 NFL Top 100 list, making him the highest ever debutant, as well as the highest-ranked defensive player. In addition to his top of the chart status, Watt was also chosen as the AFC Defensive Player of the Year and AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.

A man of extraordinary standing and humble character, Watt also founded the Justin J. Watt Foundation in 2013, which supplies support for after-school athletic programs in Wisconsin and Texas. To coincide with his organization, Watt hosted the J.J. Watt Charity Classic in Sugarland, TX the same year, which helped to raise more than 300,000 dollars for children’s after-school athletic programs.

While still continuing his work at the Justin J. Watt Foundation, Watt is now entering the advertising market as the new face of the H-E-B grocery store ad campaign. A series of the store’s ads featuring Watt are expected to air in the 2014 football season.
