Cobi Jones is a former professional soccer player for the L.A. Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Cobi was a longstanding solid midfielder for both the Galaxy and the United States National team and is the all-time leader in appearances for the U.S. team. He is also one of the popular players credited for leaving international play in 1996 to help start the MLS in the United States. He was the only player to play his whole career with same team in the league and his #13 jersey became the first jersey ever retired in MLS history.

Sports Speaker Cobi wasn’t awarded a scholarship out of high school and worked his way onto the soccer team as a walk-on at UCLA. He would prove his talent and after competing with the U.S. team in the 1994 World Cup, Cobi signed on with the Coventry City of the English Premier League. After just a season with the club, he would move on to play with the Brazilian club Vasco da Gama for several months before leaving to the Galaxy for the inaugural season of the MLS. An impressive season in 1998 lead to Cobi being named to the MLS Best XI list as well as being recognized as the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year. He was a part of 3 U.S. World Cup teams and was a big help in the team’s 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup victory.

After retirement, Cobi remained with the Galaxy as an assistant coach from 2008-2011 before deciding to assume a position as Associate Director of Soccer with the New York Cosmos. During his post playing career he has also served as a FOX Soccer analyst as well as an analyst for the L.A. Galaxy on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet. His latest gig as an analyst has brought him back to his humble beginnings at UCLA as he know serves as an analyst for the Pac-12 Network.
