Biography:

Sports Speaker Carl Yastrzemski will forever be immortalized as one of the greatest players in Boston Red Sox franchise history. Carl spent all 23 seasons of his MLB career with the Red Sox from 1961-1983. He played most of his career as a left fielder before moving to first base and playing as a designated hitter in the later stages of his illustrious career. In 2013, the Red Sox erected a commemorative statue of Carl located outside of Fenway Park.

In 1963, just 2 years into the majors, Carl won the American League batting title as well as leading the league in doubles and walks. A few years later in 1967, he won the American League MVP and AL Triple Crown Award posting 44 home runs, 121 RBIs, a .326 batting average and helping the Red Sox win the American League pennant. During the 1976 season, Carl tied a major league record after hitting 5 home runs in two consecutive games. In his last two seasons in the show, at ages 42 and 43, he was selected to two more All-Star Appearances. Carl finished his career with an impressive 18 All-Star appearances, 7 Gold Glove awards and his #8 jersey being retired by the Red Sox. He is the Red Sox all-time leader in career RBIs, singles, doubles, hits, total bases and games played. Sports Speaker Carl Yastrzemski was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.

Carl followed in the footsteps of fellow Red Sox great Ted Williams and has been a huge supporter of The Jimmy Fund for cancer research. After the 1967 World Series, Carl along with teammates gave their team bonus from the World Series to the fund. After being named Honorary Chairman of the fund, in 1979 Carl received the fund’s highest honor, the Yawkey Award, for his dedication throughout the years. To this day, Carl continues to support The Jimmy Fund.
