Famed basketball player Bill Walton made his mark on the sport as a standout college and professional athlete and television sportscaster. Sports Speaker Bill played for the UCLA before moving up to the NBA.

As a Bruin, Bill helped the team to dominate collegiate basketball and create a UCLA dynasty. Without the nearly seven foot tall center leading the team, it would not have been possible for the Bruins to have a NCAA record 88 game winning streak, finishing nearly every game 30 points ahead of their opponents. Many consider Bill to be one of the greatest college athletes to ever step foot on the basketball court, and his 1973 James E. Sullivan Award, the most prestigious award given to the top amateur athlete in the United States, confirms this to be true; he was also the national college player of the year for three consecutive years.

After his college days were over, Bill became the backbone of the Portland Trail Blazers, helping to turn the franchise around and facing off against the league’s best such as fellow UCLA graduate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Unfortunately, Bill was plagued by injuries for most of his professional career, but that did not stop him from becoming a two-time NBA champion in 1977 and 1986, the NBA Finals MVP in 1977, and the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1978. His nearly exhaustive list of accomplishments, which continued to lengthen after his retirement, landed him in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and on NBA’s list of 50 Greatest Players of All Time. His jersey has been retired at both UCLA and by the Portland Trail Blazers.

After retirement, Bill became an Emmy Award winning color commentator, documenter, and sportscaster for NBC, ABC, ESPN, and the Los Angeles Clippers; he has been featured in multiple feature films and commercials for companies such as Capital One, Tostitos, and Reebok. Named by Forbes as one of the top ten pundits in America in 2007, Bill is an expert and dynamic speaker on success and overcoming obstacles; his life story is one of both ups and downs.

Bill’s son, Luke Walton, is also a former player and NBA champion, making them the only father-son duo to hold multiple NBA championship titles.
