Sports Speaker Bill Elliott is a former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver who was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in August of 2007. Bill is considered one of the all-time greats of the sport and won the Sprint Cup Series Most Popular driver award 16 times. He is currently 1 of only 9 drivers to ever win the Daytona 500 twice (1985, 1987).

Bill Elliott raced in a time where sponsorships and free cars and parts were few and far between and many would race without corporate sponsorships. Bill’s first taste of NASCAR’s premier series came without a sponsor and he would have to wait  5 years before Melling Racing signed him on to run a race schedule with their team. After 7 years of racing with multiple top-10 and top-5 finishes Bill won his first Sprint Cup Series race in 1983 and finished 3rd in the championship standings.  The following year Bill earned his first major sponsorship from Coors and won 14 races in the next two years and was just the second driver at the time to appear on the cover of Sports illustrated. His lasting records in NASCAR are his two average speed records which he first set at Daytona with an average speed of 210.364 and then broke his own record at Talladega with an average speed of 212.809. With today’s restrictor plates and new NASCAR regulations, Bill’s records will likely never be surpassed. His career numbers in the Sprint Cup Series total 44 wins, 55 pole victories, and 320 top-10 finishes before he was eventually appointed to NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers list.

During his time in NASCAR Bill saw many triumphs and even started his own independent team for a few years before eventually selling it to Ray Evernham. Today he is still involved in NASCAR, with his son Chase participating in the Nationwide Series and Bill still going so far as to tests cars for JR Motorsports.
