Biography:

Sports Speaker Andy Murray is a star professional tennis player. Murray is famous for winning the 2012 Olympic Games men’s singles title, becoming the first British singles champion in over 100 years. In addition, Murray is famous for winning the 2012 US Open singles title and the 2013 Wimbledon singles title. In 2011, Murray became the seventh player in the Open Era to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in one year.

At the age of 18, Murray amazingly reached the third round of the men’s singles tournament at Wimbledon. In addition, Murray also became the youngest Briton to play in the Davis Cup during this year, 2005. At the end of the year, he was named the 2006 BBC Scotland Sports Personality of the Year. The following year, Murray became one of only two players to defeat Roger Federer in 2006, breaking Federer’s 55 match winning streaks on hard courts. In 2008, he reached the final of the Us Open, becoming the first player from Britain since 1997 to reach a major final. Two years later, Murray won the Shanghai Rolex Master; this was his second title of the year and sixth of his career. In 2012, Murray won the London 2012 Summer Olympics singles title against Roger Federer. By winning the gold medal, Murray became the first British man to win the Olympic singles gold medal since 1908. Later in the year, Murray won the US Open singles title; this made Murray the first man ever to win the Olympic gold medal and the US Open in the same year. The following year, Murray won the Wimbledon singles title, extending his winning streak on grass to an impressive 18 matches. With this victory, Murray became the second man in the open era to hold the Olympic singles gold medal and Wimbledon title at the same time.

Murray endorses a number of companies, including Adidas, Head, Rado, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Highland Spring. He is a founding member of the Malaria No More UK Leadership Council and made a public service announcement in support of the charity. He has also participated in several charity tennis events, including Rally Against Cancer and Rally for Relief.
