Biography:

Alonzo Mourning was an imposing presence on the hardwood throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s. Assuming the role as one of the most intimidating personalities on the court and a community caregiver off the floor, Alonzo is one of the most recognizable players of his generation. After playing his college career at Georgetown University, Mourning went on to become one of the greatest defensive players in NBA history.

Sports Speaker Alonzo Mourning was drafted 2nd overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, and he immediately asserted himself as one of the best center’s in the NBA. Mourning as traded to the Miami Heat in 1995, and it was there that he became recognized as a superstar. After 5 very successful seasons with the Heat it appeared that Mourning was on his way to cementing his legacy as one of the best post-players to ever play the game. But in 2000, Mourning was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease that greatly hampered his ability to remain healthy and play the game he loved. Mourning was forced receive a kidney transplant from an estranged cousin in order to continue his dwindling basketball career in 2003. Mourning returned to the court in 2004, and his return allowed him to play a pivotal role in the 2006 Miami Heat Championship Team. Alonzo’s career accomplishments are numerous despite his limiting condition and include 7 NBA All-Star appearances, 2-Defensive Player of the Year Awards and an induction into the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.

Off the court, Mourning has been a major player in charity events in organizations. Alonzo has established multiple charity organizations including Alonzo Mourning Charities Inc. and Athletes for Hope. In addition he funded the Overtown Youth Center for underprivileged kids, and has recently been honored with a high school in the Miami-Dade area established with his namesake.
