Sports Speaker Mike Ditka joined the Chicago Bears in 1961 and immediately made an impact, snagging 58 receptions and 12 receiving touchdowns during his freshman season. His 12 receiving touchdowns set a record for Bears rookies, and at the end of the season he received the Rookie of the Year award. He played for the Bears for the next five seasons, earning a Pro Bowl selection each season. In 1963, he helped the Bears win the NFL championship. Ditka left the Bears ranking first among tight ends and fourth in Bears history in yards gained with 4,503. In addition, he finished fifth in Bears history in receptions and touchdown passes. Ditka briefly played for the Eagles before joining the Cowboys in 1969; he spent four seasons with this team. In 1972, Ditka won the Super Bowl with the Cowboys. The following year, Sporting News ranked him among the 100 Greatest Football Players of all time.

After retiring, Ditka spent nine years as an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys. In 1982, Ditka was hired as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. During his third season with the Bears, Ditka led the team to the NFC Championship game. The following year, Ditka led the Bears to a Super Bowl victory, completely dominating the Patriots 46-10.
