Biography:

Maria Sharapova is a Russian professional tennis player who is ranked No. 3 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association. Sharapova has won four Grand Slam singles titles and twenty-nine Women’s Tennis Association singles titles. She has been ranked number No.1 in singles 21 weeks over the span of her career.

Sports Speaker Sharapova debuted as a professional tennis player at only 14 years old and became the youngest woman to ever reach the Australian Open junior championship at 14 years and 9 months. At age 17, Sharapova stunned the world by defeating two-time defending champion Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon Final for her first Grand Slam singles title. In 2005, Sharapova won the Toray Pan Pacific Open, the Qatar Total Open, and the DFS Classic. In August 2005, Sharapova became the first Russian woman to hold the world no. 1 ranking. The following year, Sharapova won the US Open, clinching her second Grand Slam singles title. In addition, she finished the year ranked no. 2, her best end-of- year finish. In 2008, Sharapova dominated the Australian Open to win her third Grand Slam title; she did not lose a set the entire tournament. Four years later, Sharapova became the sixth woman in the Open Era to complete the career Grand Slam in singles by winning the 2012 French Open.  Sharapova also won an Olympic silver medal in London this year.

Sharapova has endorsed an abundance of different companies, including Porsche, Motorola, Land Rover, Tiffany, Tropicana, and Canon. In addition, Sharapova owns a candy line called “Sugarpova,” which donates all profits to charity. Sharapova has had a prolific modeling career, which includes a six-page feature in the 2006 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was ranked the hottest athlete in the world by Maxim for four consecutive years and was also recognized for her beautiful appearance in People and FHM. Sharapova is a United Nations Development Program Goodwill Ambassador and started the Maria Sharapova Foundation, which provides college scholarships to disadvantaged youth.
