Biography:

Motivational Speaker Kenny Smith is a former NBA point guard and current NBA studio analyst on Inside the NBA on TNT alongside co-hosts Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley. The show brings a unique blend of basketball insight and hilarity, winning 9 Emmy Awards over its span including the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Studio Show. In May of 2015 it was announced that the Inside the NBA crew would stay intact with each co-host signing multi-year contracts.

During his playing career, Kenny reached the apex of NBA success after winning back-to-back NBA championships with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995. Kenny and his wife, model Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith, alongside their 5 children were recently featured in their own reality-television show, Meet the Smiths. The reality show that depicted everyday life of the Smith family premiered in April 2015 on TBS and concluded in May of 2015.

Motivational Speaker Kenny Smith began his basketball career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983, playing his freshman season with all-time NBA great Michael Jordan. Kenny enjoyed a successful college career at UNC, solidifying himself as one of the many outstanding players to come through UNC’s legendary basketball program. In 1987, Kenny was named a First-Team All-American as well as the National Basketball Player of the Year by Basketball Times. He ended his career at UNC as the school’s all-time leader in assist and steals. Kenny graduated from the University with a degree in Industrial Relations.

Upon entering the 1987 NBA draft, Motivational Speaker Kenny Smith was selected as the 6th overall pick by the Sacramento Kings. Kenny made an immediate impact in the league, becoming the team’s starting point guard and receiving NBA All-Rookie First Team honors. After three seasons with the Kings and a brief stint with the Atlanta Hawks, Kenny enjoyed the pinnacle of his playing career as a member of the Houston Rockets from 1990-1996. The Rockets won the franchises 2 championship trophies with Kenny as a member of the team in 1994 and 1995, defeating the New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic, respectively. After brief stints with the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic, Kenny retired from the NBA as a member of the Denver Nuggets in 1997.

Kenny’s post-playing career started in 1998 when he joined the Inside the NBA on TNT cast. The cast now consists of Kenny, Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley. He also worked as a color analyst for MSG Networks during New York Knick games from 2005-2008. In addition to his commentary, Kenny has lent his voice for the video game NBA 2k8 as a commentator. Outside of his involvement with professional basketball, Kenny hosted a Hurricane Katrina All-Star game, benefiting victims of the devastating Hurricane in New Orleans.
