Biography:

Sports Speaker Joe Theismann is a broadcaster and former NFL star quarterback. He is most famous for his 12 years playing with the Washington Redskins, where he won a Super Bowl and was a two-time Pro Bowler. Theismann was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

After playing in the CFL, Theismann joined the Redskins in 1974. He eventually became the starting quarterback for the Redskins, and in 1982 led the Redskins to their first championship in 40 years.  Theismann threw two touchdown passes in the Super Bowl game, and ironically made a key defensive play by preventing Dolphins defensive lineman Kim Bokamper from a potential game-changing interception. The Redskins made the Super Bowl the following year, and Theismann set several Redskins franchise records: most career passing attempts (3,602), most career passing completions (2,044), and most career passing yards (25,206). He also was selected as NFL MVP in 1983 by four organizations.

After retiring from football, Sports Speaker Joe Theismann became a sportscaster with ESPN. He worked as a color commentator on regional CBS NFL coverage in 1986 and 1987 and as an analyst on ESPN’s Sunday Night Football from 1988 to 2005. He also worked on Monday Night Football coverage in 2006. Theismann analyzed game films on the show Playbook in 2009, and after 2009 temporarily co-hosted football coverage on NBC and the show No Huddle.

Theismann was inducted into the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1997. He has served as a spokesperson for several companies, including Colonial Penn Life Insurance and the supplement company Super Beta Prostate. Theismann is a member of the Sports Advisory Board of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on serious diseases plaguing children. Theismann contributes all of his website autograph fees to St. Jude’s and has participated in golf tournament fundraisers for the hospital. He regularly performs motivational speeches for charities, corporations, universities, chambers of commerce, and association meetings.
