Biography:

The image of sports speaker Desmond Howard striking the Heisman pose in the back of the end zone after a nifty touchdown for Michigan has remained an iconic image in college football lore even to this day. Now Desmond acts as a vital part of the hallowed ESPN College Gameday crew with fellow sports analysts Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit. Every Saturday morning these recognizable sports speakers break down the day’s coming match-ups and entertain an entire nation of college football fans.

By the time Desmond Howard reached the University of Michigan in the fall of 1989, everyone knew he was something special. The wide-receiver and punt return extraordinaire dazzled the crowd with his quick cuts and played his way onto the Heisman trophy ballot in 1991. Desmond took home 85% of the first-place votes on his way to hoisting the Heisman trophy in only his junior season. In 2011, Desmond was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and received a special honor from Michigan as the first player to be recognized as an official Michigan Football Legend, similar to the retiring of a former player’s jersey. Now each player that wears Desmond’s iconic #21 jersey will wear a special commemorative patch as well as dress in front of a locker bearing Desmond’s name and tenure with the team.

Desmond was the 4th overall pick in the 1992 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He would develop as a punt and kickoff return specialist and played for several NFL teams including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions. In 1996, Desmond recorded the second longest kickoff return for a touchdown in Super Bowl history with a 99-yard kickoff return that shifted momentum and effectively sealed the Super Bowl victory for the Packers. He finished his career as a member of the Detroit Lions and now acts as the Lions’ pre-season color commentator in addition to his duties with ESPN.
